Overview
As children grow older, friendships, family relationships, and social interactions become a very important part of their daily lives. At the age of 9–10, learners spend more time working with others, making friends, solving disagreements, and learning how to communicate their thoughts and feelings.
This module helps learners understand how to build healthy relationships through kindness, respect, honesty, teamwork, and good communication. Through relatable stories and real-life situations, learners will explore how their words and actions affect others and how positive relationships can make life happier and healthier.
Learners will also begin understanding that people are different from one another and that treating others with kindness and respect is an important life skill. The module introduces simple conflict-solving skills and teaches learners how to handle social situations in a calm and responsible way.
The lessons are written in an engaging and story-driven style to help learners connect emotionally with the reading while strengthening comprehension and communication skills.

Why This Module Is Important
At this age, children are learning how to:
- make and keep friends

- communicate emotions
- handle disagreements
- understand fairness
- build trust
- respond to peer pressure and social situations
Many children experience:
- friendship struggles
- feelings of exclusion

Without guidance, learners may struggle to understand how to manage these situations in healthy ways. This module helps children develop important relationship skills early in life.
The goal is to help learners become:

- emotionally aware
- better communicators
- stronger teammates and friends
These social and emotional skills are important not only at school, but throughout life.
Why Reading Is Important at This Stage
At Grade 4 level, reading is no longer only about recognising words. It becomes a tool for understanding people, emotions, behaviour, and relationships.
Reading stories about friendships and real-life situations helps learners:
- improve comprehension
- develop empathy
- understand emotions
- build communication skills
- strengthen vocabulary
- improve concentration
- think critically about behaviour and choices
Story-based reading also allows learners to explore situations safely and learn valuable lessons through characters and experiences they can relate to.
The IgniteRead™ Junior program uses reading to help learners:
- connect emotionally
- think independently
- understand social situations
- and build healthy life skills naturally through storytelling
At this stage, reading plays an important role in both emotional growth and academic development.
